Class Experience

For students to be successful, they need to know the sounds of the 26 alphabet letters. We will use their letter sound knowledge to have some fun. For example, we will use the sounds to make words. Then we will take words apart sound by sound. Doing these fun activities creates phonemic awareness, a skill necessary for successful readers and writers.

In addition, we will be fine tuning the students’ listening skills as we listen carefully to the pronunciation of words to decide what the initial and final sounds are. Of course, all these activities will be done in a playful, entertaining way.

Playing with all the letter sounds will build to our final skill of determining how many syllables are in a word. We will engage our bodies, using our hands and chin, to count syllables.

This one-time class will be very interactive. Learning will be fun and active and even include a couple games of ‘I spy’ played in a creative, new way.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I'm Ms. Shannon. I absolutely love teaching! Interacting with students and watching the "lightbulb" turn on is one of the greatest joys I can experience. I graduated with a BS in Elementary Education and hold a Teaching Certificate. I have spent the past 23 years teaching in one capacity or another. I began as a first and second grade bilingual teacher in the public schools. I then transitioned to homeschooling my own children. My oldest is now a freshman in college, and his two younger sisters are not far behind. Eight years ago I launched language art classes in a university model school, shortly after incorporating high school Spanish classes as well. In addition, I dove into the world of virtual teaching as I began to teach ESL using the online platform.

I believe every learner has the potential to reach any goal given to him. When I teach, I set the expectation high. Time and time again I have watched my students reach my expectations. Children are capable of so much. I empower my students so they can succeed. I teach using a very animated, whole body approach. We swing our arms, sing, and make funny faces. When the whole body is engaged, the learning sticks. And learning also becomes fun. My students enjoy class and want to come back for more.

I love teaching. I also love reading! When I combine the two, teaching reading, I am in my happy place. I teach every aspect of reading…phonics, syllables, grammar, literary skills such as setting, character, conflict and so much more. With my first and second graders, I focus on phonics and building reading fluency and comprehension. Teaching third and fourth graders, I have emphasized spelling rules and also literary skills. Fifth grade has been my outlet for grammar. I also incorporate grammar when teaching high school Spanish. Learning a second language is so much easier when you can build on English grammar.

I would consider it an honor to teach your child. I will be waiting in the classroom.
