Buy low and sell high are the driving principles when 'playing the stock markets'. However, before a single dollar is invested, its a good idea for investors to understand how the markets work and to define their investment goals and strategy first. In this class, students will gain a basic understanding of the stock markets, investing in publicly traded stocks, and investment strategies. Week 1 will include introductions and an overview stocks and stock markets: What Are Stocks? A stock is simply a share of ownership in a company or corporation. There are two types of stock: private and public. A public corporation is one that issues stock that the general public can buy and trade on stock market exchanges. In a private corporation, the stock is usually held by a small number of people such as private investors, management and employees, and they’re not traded publicly on any exchange. What are stock markets? In a nutshell, a stock market is where investors can buy and sell securities, or stakes in individual companies. Week 2 will feature an overview on investment strategies: What Are Investment Strategies? Investment strategies define your purpose for investing, time-frame, assets / dollars you are willing commit, what type of stocks you are willing to invest in, and what level of risk you are comfortable with. Week 3 will focus on recent stock market trends and trading apps / platforms such as Acorns, E*trade and Robinhood. Week 4 will be a review class and feature suggestions for investing smartly such as investing in companies not stocks

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi!
I'm a graduate of The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Governor's School for Business, and the Young Entrepreneurs at Wharton program. Entrepreneurship is my passion and I love discussing new ideas and helping others build their companies. I've started over 20 companies, consulted dozens and review hundreds of business plans and I would like to pass on what I've learned to the next generation of entrepreneurs.
I have over 30 years of experience as an entrepreneur in various industries. My projects have included several financial technology and seed stage funding platforms, a chocolate retailer, a wine retailer, a wine game, and a roommate matching service. I'm currently focused on building an infrastructure project in Colombia, Puerto Internacional Las Americas, which will transfer shipping containers between two fully automated ports on Colombia's Atlantic and Pacific coasts via a high-speed magnetic levitation (maglev) tunnel. I feel that I'm well qualified to speak on entrepreneurship, business plan writing, and marketing a small business.
