Class Experience

In these private ongoing classes, your child will be introduced to American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary through a variety of fun hands-on activities.

Children learn best through fun and play. To introduce new concepts to assist learners to confidently communicate in ASL a variety of fun songs, puppets, concept cards, stories and interactive games will be incorporated in each lesson.

Sign language involves seeing, hearing and movement, the perfect combination of how young children learn. To accommodate different learning styles, I use the SEE – SAY – SIGN approach where I show a picture of the vocabulary word so children can see the word, say the word ,then sign the word, allowing for practice and repetition of key vocabulary associated with each lesson.

If your child is working on learning the alphabet, colors, shapes, feelings, etc., then each lesson will focus on helping your child learn key concepts and signs for that lesson.

When children enjoy a class and know how to use the signs they learn, they are much more likely to retain them. No ASL experience is required. Because practice and repletion is the key to learning, each week, children will receive a short video of the signs introduced in that day’s lesson, so that they can keep practicing. This will be posted in the classroom at the conclusion of each session.

NOTE: These sessions are designed to help build ASL vocabulary where your child will learn how to sign simple phrases (I like/don’t like eggs) and use key word signs in songs, rhymes, books and games.

I am a certified ‘Time to Sign’ ASL instructor with more than 15 years experience, but I don't teach American Sign Language (ASL). I use ASL to teach ‘key word’ signing. My passion is combining the many components of ASL into my curriculum to promote early literacy, expand alphabet knowledge, improve early math skills and enhance social/emotional development of young learners.
My classes are designed to provide engaging sign and play activities that encourage curiosity and exploration. When children are playing, laughing, and smiling, they are learning!
