Plate Tectonics in the Real World (Volcanoes and More!)

In this third lesson of the Let's Explore Earth series, we will examine how plate tectonic movement results in the different types of volcanoes (and tsunamis and earthquakes) using fascinating examples from around the globe!

Class Experience

Welcome to "Plate Tectonics in the Real World (Volcanoes and More!)". In this class, we will briefly learn (or review, if students previously took Lesson 2 of the Let's Explore Earth Series) the three main types of plate tectonic movement. We will use this information to understand WHY there is so much seismic and volcanic activity along the Ring of Fire! The bulk of the lesson will be spent exploring different types of volcanoes and other effects of tectonic movement using examples from around the world and from a variety of points in recent history.

The information in this class will be learned through a combination of lecture-style slides and class discussions, along with a short video clip and a two drawing activities that students will complete during class. New information and photos will be presented in slides, and as a class we will answer questions and have discussions together! All students are provided a handout to document their learning throughout the class by answering the questions. They will also be provided with web access to the slides -- no need to worry about writing down all the new information! No prior knowledge is required, although an understanding of the Theory of Plate Tectonics (studied in Lesson 2 of this series) will enhance students' experience of this class.

This is Lesson 3 of the Let's Explore Earth series, a group of lessons designed to introduce students to various areas of study in the field of Geosciences.

(Please note that all theories and information contained in this lesson are the widely-accepted theories in the current scientific community).
Learning Goals
Students will understand what the Ring of Fire is, and why a high level of seismic and volcanic activity occurs there. Students will be able to recognize the three main types of volcanoes and give an example of each. Students will also be able to explain and discuss a variety of volcanoes around the world, and some historically important eruptions and other events.

Hello everyone! My name is Annette and I'm a teacher originally from Toronto, Canada, but currently located in Nicaragua.

I have both passion AND experience teaching a wide variety of science topics. I developed an intense interest in geological and biological sciences from a very young age, and earned a Bachelor of Science (Honours Biology) and a Bachelor of Education, both from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. I have two years' in-school experience teaching Geography, Biology, and General Science for grades 7-13 in Canada and England, and three years of experience teaching English as a Foreign Language online. However, I've been working with children in a variety of other settings for over 13 years! Here on Outschool, I offer a range of science classes and courses for approximately 10-16 year olds. I am also queer and I'm VERY passionate about providing a safe, inclusive, and welcoming class environment for all of my students. My classroom is a place for all who need a safe space to learn.
