During the course of the class, we'll brew a delicious cup of traditional masala chai and discuss the daily ritual of taking tea in India, both past and present. Students will discuss slides of a brief history of tea in India, Indian tea plantations, and taking tea in India, including snacks. We'll also discuss students' own experiences with tea. Students will learn how to order tea in Tamil, the language of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. A recipe for masala chai will be shared at the end of the class.

Students may bring their own cup of tea and a snack to enjoy during the class, but this is not required.

I lived and worked in Chennai (Madras), India for almost five years where I further developed my love of tea, especially of masala chai. I visited tea plantations from north to south in India. I took masala chai twice daily, almost without fail, during my time in there.
