Picture Book Writing 101

In this two-week Creative Writing class, your child learns how to create a picture book. They'll develop writing skills, reading skills, master the writing process and have fun sharing their world in pictures.

After students complete their story, the teacher will give thorough feedback.

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Intermediate - Advanced Level
In this creative writing class students will learn about how authors create picture books from an actual published picture book author. They will learn about different types of stories, rules for creating picture books and more.  Students will get the opportunity to create and revise their picture book and share it with the class.  Students do not need any art skills or can be a great artists as many authors get their books illustrated for them.

10 Lessons
over 2 Weeks
Lesson 1:
What EXACTLY is a picture book
 Students will learn about different types of picture books and how they are made. They will also look at a few picture books.

Lesson 2:
Concept Picture Books
 Students will read concept picture books (numbers, letters, colors, sports) and create their own.

Lesson 3:
Poetic Language
 Students will learn about the poetic language in picture books (rhyme, repetition, imagery) 
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Story Arc
 Students will learn about story arc and creating a picture book based on a story

Supply List
Students should have white paper (card stock is best); drawing utensils (crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc.)
