Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 3
Beginner Level
This course consists of 6 "traditional style" piano lessons based on the book Faber Piano Adventures Level 1 Lesson Book. Each learner will need a copy of this book for the class. Throughout this course learners will focus on memorizing the lines of the treble staff as they learn songs and related music theory. Learners will be presented with visuals of the songs as well as a keyboard visual to facilitate understanding throughout the lesson. During each class, learners will review music theory, review previous songs, learn new songs, and demonstrate good piano playing technique. Learners will also be introduced to transposing songs from C to G. Learners will learn up to 8 songs throughout this course.

Learners should practice between classes to improve their skills and prepare for class. Videos, play-along tracks, and notes will be posted after each meeting to assist with practice between classes.

Music theory in this course includes treble lines, transposing, legato, slur, staccato, tie, damper pedal (if applicable), and treble A.

This course is designed to follow Primer Level piano instruction or Level 1 downloadable curriculum depending on the age and skill of the learners. Learners should know how to count music with quarter notes, half notes, dotted half notes, whole notes and quarter rests. Learners should be able to name some notes on the staff and play simple songs with 2 hands.

While it is not required, individual playing will help learners receive positive feedback to facilitate progress. Learners are encouraged to respond positively when others play to facilitate a safe performance space.

Arranging your device to show your hands, keeping your video on during class and practicing between classes will optimize learning.

Texas Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
Hello! My name is Mrs. McArthur and I teach MUSIC! I am a Texas certified all-level music teacher with 29 years of teaching experience, 26 years in public schools and 3 years online and homeschool experience. I have taught preschool through eighth grade General Music and Choir classes. I received a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education with an emphasis in vocal music from Oklahoma Baptist University.

I believe that every learner can make music! Learners need a variety of experiences to learn music skills, including visual, aural and kinesthetic. Given sequential steps, students can achieve well beyond the expectations. When creativity is modeled, learners discover that making mistakes improves music. Learners need opportunities to be creative with choices so they can create on their own terms and interests. By making connections to science, social studies, math and beyond, students learn that subjects don’t exist in isolation. Music is the universal language and learners deserve a chance to explore the world through a musical lens!
