Photography Basics for Teens: Controlling the Blur in Action Photos

Ages 13-16
Live One-Time Class
Have you ever wondered, "Why are my photos blurry?" A main cause of blurry photos is a shutter speed that's set too slow. In this class, learners will learn shutter speed and how to use it for sports and other action photos.

Class Experience

Understanding shutter speed is foundational to taking great photographs. In this class we will discuss a wide range of shutter speeds, what they do and when to use a fast shutter speed versus a slow shutter speed.

I have wide variety of professional photography experiences and a diverse collection of photographic images. I will share some of these experiences and images during the class as examples of what different shutter speeds do.

Since shutter speed is one of the features of a camera that controls exposure, we will cover what exposure is and why it's important to make a good exposure with your camera.

I will use Keynote software to present various slides discussing shutter speed and exposure. I will also display dozens of images with their corresponding shutter speeds to help students understand the effects of shutter speeds and why certain shutter speeds work for different situations. Throughout the class time I will ask students questions to better understand how well they are grasping the concepts being taught.

Learning Goals

Students will learn which shutter speeds they should use for various situations. The goal is to help the students understand how to control motion blur in their photographs.

Other Details

Supply List
No supplies will be needed for the actual class, but I recommend that students have access to a digital SLR camera or comparable mirrorless camera. These cameras allow the photographer easy access to the camera shutter speed controls. The students won’t be using the cameras in class, but it would be helpful for them to have access to such a camera to later practice what they will learn in the class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
