US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
Does your child know how to read CVC words, such as bed, pig, and hot? If so, your learner is likely ready to learn consonant blends, digraphs, and vowel digraphs! (If your child has difficulty sounding out CVC words, I have another class that may be better suited for your learner: Phonics FUNdamentals: Blend, Read, & Write CVC Words with Word Families) In this twice weekly, 7-week course, we will learn to blend, read and write words with consonant blends and digraphs, CVCC (consonant-vowel-consonant-consonant) words, and CVCE (silent e) words. We will use a systematic approach while incorporating a variety of multisensory techniques and fun activities! A few sight words will be included along the way. We will start by doing a fun phonemic awareness activity to help us to hear the target sound, such as singing a silly song or doing a funny chant. Next, we will review each sound in the word, dramatizing each one. For example, we will “fan” ourselves while making the /f/ sound and “lick” an imaginary lollipop while making the /l/ sound. Next, we will do hands-on activities as we sound out each phoneme (each sound in the word) and blend them together. Some examples of these activities are: - Press in a bubble in a popper toy for each phoneme; for example: /m/ [pop!], /a/ [pop!], /n/ [pop!]. - On a handout (provided) showing rows of boxes, I will demonstrate how to slide a token into a separate box for each phoneme; for example: /s/ (slide). /i/ (slide), /t/ (slide). Please note: The learners are not required to do this activity alongside me. While I am sharing my 2nd camera, it is difficult for me to see whether your child is doing this correctly or not. However, if a parent or other helper is available to supervise, your child would love to play along! (Please remember that per Outschool policy, parents must stay off camera while helping.) - After sliding a magnetic token to each phoneme box, we use a magnetic wand to “zap” the word. (The students LOVE this!) - Tap on a different part of our arm as we say each phoneme, then “wipe” our arm quickly as we say the word Every class has fun, different activities! For example, we might pretend to be trains as we make the "ch" sound. Each class will feature a slide show presentation illustrating the phonemes and words we are studying. Every learner will be given chances to speak, demonstrate, and read throughout class. Here is the list of phonograms that we will be studying: Week 1 CVCE words (“Bossy E” rule); sm- blend Review CVCE, sm- blend; sp-, st-, sn- blends Week 2 Long A phonograms: digraph ai; ay; CVCE Review Long A; bl-, cl-, fl- blends Week 3 Long E phonograms: e, ee, ea, ey, y (end), CVCE (ie) gl-, pl-, sl- blends Week 4 Long I phonograms: i, ie, y, CVCE cr-, pr-, br- blends Week 5 Long O phonograms: o, oe, CVCE, oa fr-, dr-, gr- Week 6 Long U (yoo) phonograms: u, ue, ew, CVCE ch-, sh- digraphs Week 7 Long U (oo): u, ue, CVCE, ew, ou, ui Th- digraph; review We'll have a blast! I hope to see your learner in class! Mrs. Laura

Parental Guidance
Please remember that per Outschool policy, parents must stay off camera while helping.
If there are other young children around below the age of 3, please be aware that some manipulatives (magnetic tokens, pennies, or other small items) can be choking hazards. You may consider substituting larger items such as checkers, toy coins, or poker chips.
Supply List
— Pop It fidget toy (any brand or color, with at least 5 bubbles in a straight line) — Magnet wand and magnet chips (I have also seen these at Hobby Lobby, as well as similar wands in sewing stores) Wand and chips set (any set like this is fine, though it is best to have at least two colors of chips): https://www.amazon.com/Dacefloy-Magnetic-Counting-Plastic-Markers/dp/B09D1J135C Extra wand (if you need multiple wands, it’s cheaper to buy any extra wands separately): https://www.amazon.com/Dowling-DO-801-Primary-Colored-Assorted/dp/B01IQRNWH6/ — Print page 1 of the "Phonics Boxes" document (link provided in welcome email). Please note: I will be demonstrating this in class, and your child is welcome to do it alongside me. However, when I share my 2nd camera to demonstrate, the learner's videos are reduced in size, making it difficult for me to see whether they are doing the activity correctly. It can be helpful for a parent or other person to supervise. The class recordings are shared for your convenience and are helpful for additional practicing. It would be preferable to print or mount the phonics boxes document on cardstock to make it sturdier. You could also place it in a sheet protector or dry erase pocket, such as this one: https://www.dollartree.com/teaching-tree-reusable-dry-erase-plastic-pockets/196807 — If not using the magnetic wand/chips mentioned above, your learner will need small objects to slide onto the "Phonics Boxes" paper. Examples: pennies, BINGO chips, plastic coins (such as those in the party favor section), checkers, poker chips, washers, paper clips, and so forth.
