Phonics, Spelling and Decoding Support Camp for Upper Grade Students, Ages 9-12

Does your fourth, fifth or sixth grader still struggle to spell? Do they freeze when they encounter a tricky word in their reading? Do they still spell 'hope' as 'hop' or 'main' as 'man'? Then this class is for them! Most phonics instruction stops in the primary grades and students get little help thereafter with the rules of phonics. They continue to struggle with spelling. They continue to struggle to decode. Then their comprehension and writing suffer all because they are missing a few of the basics. This course, led be a certified reading specialist, meets for just 25 minutes, two times a week for twelve weeks. In that time, your child will learn phonics through a systematic, explicit and age-appropriate approach with their peers. Phonemic awareness work will also be included if deemed necessary through the initial assessment. Students will have homework after each class using Google Forms to practice the work they completed in class. This is also a great opportunity as a parent to see what they are working on in class and support them at home as well. Week 1: -Initial Assessment -Short Vs. Welcome!
I am passionate about instilling a love of reading in children through sharing engaging, high interest texts. The classes I teach are literacy based, and I also offer reading assessments to help parents have a better understanding of their child's reading level and strategies to support them.
I have ten years teaching experience at the elementary level and my Masters in Reading Education from UVA and am certified to teach readers from K-12. I ran the CETA (Changing Education through the Arts) program by the Kennedy Center, at my school and find great value in arts integration.
I believe children should feel that they are valued members of a class in order to do their best learning. Classes should be engaging, interactive and social, especially in a virtual format.
I have two little guys at home and we love to bake, go on nature walks, and we just learned about Geocaching! Oh, and I'm a Penn Stater at heart- We Are!
