Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
Beginner Level
This class is all about phonics, letter sounds, blending letters to make words, and beginning to read! We will start with a quick assessment, and start from where the student is in their reading journey. We will proceed to work on and improve the students reading with a variety of online games, activities, and a short story.
I like to be kind, encouraging and supportive in my classes. It's all about having fun while learning, making progress and not about perfection.
There will be plenty of interaction and activities without unnecessary teacher talk! I want my students to feel free, to be expressive and to enjoy themselves while learning!
Learning Goals
The goal of this class is simply to help phonics to stick with multiple exposures in multiple contexts. We will be learning to recognize letter sounds, form words, write simple words, spell, play games, and guide the student in reading a short story.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Eva Martens, and for the past 12 years, I have dedicated myself to helping young learners discover the joys of reading. I am most passionate about helping beginning readers and those who face challenges with reading. My goal is to make reading an enjoyable and achievable skill for every child. I like to set the tone of my classroom, by being kind, patient, and encouraging. My focus is on progress and helping students to feel accomplished in every class!

I have 8 years of experience in a private school setting both in Canada and Mexico. I volunteered at a children's home in Mexico for an amazing 6 and a half years! Most of my time was dedicated to helping children to learn both reading and math. One of my most rewarding and special experiences was helping a 14-year-old girl to read after teaching her the sounds of the letters. She was so eager to learn and made excellent progress! I learned so much from the local people and was able to learn a conversational level of Spanish.

I have also had a lot of fun teaching English and reading online to hundreds of students from Japan, South Korea, China, Turkey, Peru, Brazil, and many other places around the world!

I hold certificates in TESOL, TEFL, and Reading Simplified. I plan to implement the Reading Simplified technique in my classes. Reading Simplified focuses on teaching beginners the sounds of the letters and blending them to create words. We work with a variety of different techniques, like Switch It and Sort It that can greatly help phonics to stick and accelerate literacy!

I am married and live with my husband and friendly little dog Lucy! I love to garden, go for walks in nature, and spend time with friends!

I hope to meet you soon in an upcoming class!
