US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - Kindergarten
In this class, I will assess your child's current level of phonics and phonological awareness skills, identify their strengths, and determine areas where they may need additional support. This information will will either guide my future instruction or give you, as a parent, a clearer pathway to meet your child's specific needs. In the assessment class, I will focus on evaluating your child's abilities in the following specific areas: 1. Rhyming: Recognizing and producing words that have similar ending sounds, such as "cat" and "hat." 2. Syllabication: Identifying and counting the syllables in words, such as "but-ter-fly" having three syllables. 3. Blending: Combining individual sounds together to form words, such as blending the sounds /c/, /a/, /t/ to say "cat." 4. Segmenting: Breaking words into individual sounds or syllables, such as segmenting "cat" into /c/, /a/, /t/. 5. Manipulating sounds: Changing, adding, or deleting sounds within words. For example, changing the /p/ in "pan" to /m/ to make "man." 6. Phoneme awareness: Recognizing and manipulating individual phonemes, which are the smallest units of sound in a language. For instance, identifying that the word "sun" has three phonemes: /s/, /u/, /n/. 7. Initial, final, and medial sound identification. 8. Deletion Tasks - say "sunshine", say it again but don't say "sun" (shine). 9. Letter names and sounds. 10. Consonant, long and short vowel sounds. * Based on the accuracy of previous assessments and the individual needs of your child, I may expand the assessment to include additional reading and decoding skills. Following the class, I will send a detailed report of the skills covered in class, with tips and strategies for you to reinforce their learning at home.
