Philosophy for Kids! (Using Picture Books)

Sick day? School canceled due to weather? Have a deep thinker? This class uses popular picture books to discuss philosophical topics for kids! We will read the book together and have a creative discussion about philosophy and ethics.

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
"Philosophy for Kids" is a class designed as an introduction to philosophy and ethics through popular picture books. Students and I will read the book and have a targeted, creative discussion based on the book themes and topics. Some examples of topics discussed are: Responsibility, Identity, Bullying, Stealing, Emotions, Friendship, etc. Some of the books we will read are: The Pout-Pout Fish, Chrysanthemum, The Good Egg, The Day the Crayons Quit, Coco, Enemy Pie, and others. During this fun and thought-provoking class we will socialize in a safe space where everyone's opinions will be heard and respected. Can't wait to meet your deep thinker!

Week of March 11-15: The Pout-Pout Fish (OR choice of book from list)/Themes: Happiness & Purpose
Week of March 18-22: The Day the Crayons Quit (OR choice of book from list)/Themes: Obligation & Self-Interest
Week of March 25-29: Coco (OR choice of book from list)/Themes: Family, Identity, Stealing
Week of April 1-5: The Good Egg (OR choice of book from list)/Themes: Self Care/Love
Week of April 8-12: Chrysanthemum (OR choice of book from list)/Themes: Perfection & Bullying
Week of April 15-19: Enemy Pie (OR choice of book from list)/Theme: Friendship
Learning Goals
Students will learn to develop critical thinking skills, engage in questioning and thoughtful discussion, and explore different perspectives through character analysis. I will guide them through the philosophical aspects of the story with questioning that is designed to promote deeper thinking and comprehension. Questions such as, "What is family?" (From Coco), "What does the word 'perfect' mean to you?" (From Chrysanthemum).
