Phase 3 phonics introduces learner to the more difficult phonemes. Before going phase 3 learners should have a good grasp of phase 2 phonics and blending and segmenting CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant words such as mop, dog or cat). In phase 2 learners will cover the 19 most common single letter sounds. Some sounds are made with one letter, such as /s/ and /a/; others are made with two letter such as /ck/ and /ff/. During class time we will also practice blending and segmenting words using the new digraphs or trigraphs. A digraph is made up of two letters that make one sounds such as "ch" and "ar". Trigraphs is made up of three letter that make one sound such as "igh" and "ure". During phase 3 learners will also be introduced to tricky words such as "was" and "you". During each class we will practice writing letter and tricky words, learners should bring paper or a whiteboard to class to practice writing. Learners will also be provided with printable worksheets to further support their learning. Learners may drop in and out as needed. Once completing one cycle of classes learners are welcome to stay enrolled to further practice or progress onto phase 4. Classes are kept small to allow me to ensure that each and every student is able to understand and grasp the concepts taught in class. Learners are always encouraged to ask questions and participate in discussions, but learners will never be forced to participate and talk if they do not feel comfortable doing so! My aim is for learners to feel included and comfortable in class! If your learner has any unique learning needs or preferences, please don't hesitate to reach out to me so that we can ensure that they feel fully supported during class.
