Class Experience

This course will use Prokofiev's famous composition, Peter and the Wolf, as a basis for introducing learners to the instruments of the orchestra. Learners will learn about Sergei Prokofiev and one of his most famous pieces, Peter and the Wolf, through in-class lecture. They will learn about the different types of instruments in the orchestra, such as "woodwinds", "percussion", "brass" and "strings". As a class, we will listen to portions of Peter and the Wolf and talk about how Prokofiev uses different instruments to represent different animals. Learners will be encouraged to participate in in-class discussion where we will practice using new musical terminology.

Learners will be provided with a summarizing handout, coloring pages, and additional activities to be completed after class. They will also be provided with additional resources, such as youtube links for Peter and the Wolf in its entirety so they can listen to the composition while completing (optional) additional activities. This allows learners to keep learning long after our class time is finished!

No previous musical knowledge is needed to participate and enjoy this course! Learners only need a love of music, love of animals, and a desire to learn more.

As a classically trained musician, I am always searching for ways to introduce young learners to classical music and combining fun topics is the perfect way to teach music appreciation! Sergei Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" is an excellent tool for teaching musical terminology and music listening to young learners. It is a piece I have loved since childhood and I cannot wait to share my love of it with your learners!
