Class Experience

Voice lessons are fun for all ages! No previous experience is needed to take this class. This class is a one-time introduction to the fundamentals of vocal instruction in a fun and engaging way.

In class, students will learn to take care of their own vocal instrument - their body. We will discuss some the main parts of the body that are used to sing. Students will learn where their diaphragm is, and how it is used to support singing. And most importantly, we will learn to take care of those parts because we cannot replace our voices like we can replace other instruments!

The class encourages social interaction and is based on the voice lessons that I give in person. I use slides to pace the lesson and show the words to the exercises. All of the exercises are original, and I will play the accompaniments for all of the exercises we sing. At the beginning of class, we will have introductions and talk about our own pets or stuffed pets. We will do relaxation stretches and a breathing exercise to prepare to sing. I always begin lessons this way because singing is a physical activity that requires warming up to ensure vocal strength and sustained health. We will begin singing by using lip trills followed by fun singing exercises. Simple and silly tongue twisters are some of my favorite warm-ups to sing with children because they are easy to remember, fun, and encourage articulation and diction.

All of the stretches, breathing exercises, and vocal warm-ups will be about pets. Students may or may not sing in front of each other depending on the individual's comfort level. I want students to leave this class feeling more confident and knowing how to care for their own voices.

Students will receive a download of a coloring page that corresponds to the lesson. Many students enjoy coloring while they take the class.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the parts of the body that are used in singing as well as learn to warm-up their voices before singing. My goal is to motive students to learn more about their voices and to have the confidence to share their singing with others.
