Periodic Table of Elements (Self Paced)

Investigate the Periodic Table of Elements - This course mirrors my live Periodic Table of Elements but includes building atoms and there are no live meetings. Students can work at their own pace. while collaborating with their peers through the Outschool classroom.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
This course will introduce students to the Periodic Table of Elements, which can be quite overwhelming. Students will learn why chemical elements are organized and placed in a specific location on the table as well as the behavior and properties of many of the elements. This course is engaging and filled with hands-on activities. It will help build the foundation for high school chemistry!

Meeting 1: (Presentation & Foldable)
Part 1: Introducing the Periodic Table & Atomic Theory
Atomic Structure & Periodic Table Element Box Doodle Notes
Atomic number, atomic mass, element name, element symbol,

Meeting 2:
Part 2: Introducing the Periodic Table
Orbital Shells
Practice Calculating Protons, Neutrons & Electrons using Periodic Table of Elements
Atoms - Modeling Atoms on the Periodic Table of Elements

Meeting 3: Introduce Final Projects
Dmitri Mendeleev
Organization of the Periodic Table
Groups, periods, staircase, metals, non-metals, metalloids
      - Metals, Non-metals, and Metalloids
      Characteristics and examples
     - Chemical Groups (Families) on the Periodic Table
        Alkali metals
        Alkaline earth metals
        Halogen
        Noble gases
        Transition metals
        Lanthanides
        Actinides

Students will be given a Periodic Table of Elements coloring activity to identify gases, liquids, and solids on the periodic table of elements as well as metals, metalloids, and non-metals. This is an EXCELLENT study tool!

Meeting 4:
1. Share Final Projects through Outschool classroom.
A grading rubric will be provided for students that are in need of a grade for the course. Please let me know in advance if a grade is needed.

2. Hogwart's Periodic Table (Harry Potter Themed) Activity
This activity will allow students to organize Hogwart's elements based on their knowledge of our periodic table of elements.
(There are alternative activities provided for learners that do not want to complete the Hogwart's Periodic Table.)

Final Projects: Students will choose between two activities:
Option 1: Brochure activity or Option 2: Element Poster
Both projects will be explained in Meeting 2 recording

This is an excellent introduction to the periodic table of elements for middle school or upper elementary gifted students. It is also helpful for high school students to review and prepare for chemistry.

A flex course allows learners to cover material during a time that is convenient for them each week. Students are encouraged to check in with the teacher weekly via the Outschool classroom, which will allow for more engagement between the teacher and learner. After weekly lessons, students can collaborate with their peers by replying to the announcements and lesson postings in the Outschool classroom.

Participation will include the Introduction post, discussion posts, assignments, and projects in the Classroom. This allows students to process what they are learning by collaborating with peers and the teacher. Participation in assignments allows students to practice and reinforce learning. This also provides opportunities for the teacher to gauge student learning and provide interventions if necessary. Private messages or classroom comments are usually responded to within 24 hours with the exception of weekends.

Syllabus

4 Lessons
over 4 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Meeting 1: Introducing the Periodic Table & Atomic Theory
In Meeting 1, we delve into the Periodic Table and Atomic Theory. We explore the structure of atoms, their properties, and how they organize into elements. This foundational understanding sets the stage for comprehending chemical reactions and the behavior of matter on a fundamental level.
Lesson 2:
Meeting 2: Atoms & Periodic Table of Elements
Meeting 2 builds upon our understanding of atoms and the Periodic Table of Elements. We delve deeper into atomic structure, electron configurations, and the trends observed in the Periodic Table. This knowledge helps us predict chemical properties and reactions, laying a strong foundation for advanced chemistry concepts.
Lesson 3:
Meeting 3: Organization of the Periodic Table
In Meeting 3, we focus on the organization of the Periodic Table and color code the Periodic Table to aid comprehension. We explore the periods, groups, and trends in properties. Color coding helps visualize these patterns, making it easier to grasp and apply.
Lesson 4:
Meeting 4: Hogwart’s Periodic Table of Elements
In Meeting 4, we take a whimsical approach by using the "Hogwarts Periodic Table of Elements" to enhance our understanding of the modern-day Periodic Table. By relating elements to the magical world of Harry Potter, we make learning fun and memorable. This creative tool helps us grasp the organization, properties, and relationships among elements more effectively. I also have alternate activities for students that do not want to participate in the Harry Potter activity.
