This class uses a full curriculum to cover science, social studies, LA, math, writing, art, music & drama. If using this as a Kindergarten curriculum you should add an additional reading class. If using this as a Pre-K year it is sufficient on it's own. My teaching style is to provide a fun & welcoming place to learn! All students are encouraged to ask questions, make connections, and interact with each other. Making friends, enjoying "school" and developing a love of learning is always an essential goal. Each unit includes: a literature selection, math activities, science and social studies activities, letter recognition activities, handwriting activities, reading workshop, writing workshop, vocabulary words, sight words, and art, music, and drama activities. I will target the activities most important to do together and certain activities will be suggested for days we don't meet and optional activities if you'd like to do more. All student materials must be purchased and will be enough for the full year. Pre-requisite skills are: Interested in being read to; Able to converse about what is being read; Able to hold a pencil & Has a beginning interest in sounds and letters. If students are not ready for handwriting practice, activities can be differentiated for making letters with play-doh or stickers, etc. This is part 3 which is 4 weeks out of the total 30 week year. We will cover 3 letter units & a special Winter unit. The Winter Unit will be adapted to include the read aloud "Snowmen at Night" and the activities will include topics of snow, bells & arctic animals. Our 3 letter units will include: S - Season's of Arnold's Apple Tree, D - Dinosaurs Big & Small, P - Harold & the Purple Crayon When approaching part 4 it will be posted as a private section first to allow everyone in part 3 the first chance to enroll together.
Learning Goals
Math -- Represent addition & subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds, acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations. Solve addition and subtraction with word problems, and add and subtract within 10. For any number from 1-9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number and record the answer with a drawing or equation. Correctly name shapes regardless of their dimensions or overall size. Identify shapes as either two-dimensional or three-dimensional. Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object. Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common to see which object as "more of"/"less of" the attribute, and describe the difference. Identify and describe shapes. Analyze and compare two- and three- dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts and other attributes. Model shapes in the world by building shapes from components and drawing shapes. Compose & decompose numbers from 11-19 into ten ones and some furter ones. Fluently add & subtract within 5.
LA -- With prompting and support, identify characters, settings and major events in a story. With prompting and support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear. Use a combination of drawing, dictating and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic. Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on kindergarten reading and content. Identify new meanings for familiar words and apply them accurately. Recognize and name end punctuation.
Science -- Compare different types of the same animal to determine individual differences within a particular type of animal. Compare and sort common objects by one physical attribute. Observe common objects by using the five senses. Know how to observe and describe similarities and differences in the appearance and behavior of plants and animals.
Social Studies -- Construct maps and models of neighborhoods, incorporating such structures as police and fire stations, airports, banks, hospitals, supermarkets, harbors, schools, homes, places of worship and transportation lines.
