Paragraph Workshop

Writing paragraphs is about more than knowing a formula; in this class, you will learn from examples what makes a strong paragraph and will workshop your own paragraphs to make them stronger.

Class Experience

Students should be able to recognize a complete sentence and should have a basic understanding of grammar before taking this class.

Paragraphs are the building blocks of well-written papers and stories. In this class, we will briefly go over how paragraphs are used and how to structure paragraphs to make our writing clear to our readers. The majority of the class will be spent in workshop. We will look at how published writers have structured strong paragraphs and will perform some in-class exercises. Then, each student will examine his or her own paragraph to see where it succeeds and where it could be improved. As time allows, students will then use what we’ve learned to write a new paragraph.
Learning Goals
At the end of this class, students will have tools and examples to use in writing strong paragraphs.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
We will use several examples of paragraphs taken from classic works, children's literature, and some non-fiction sources. All examples will be age appropriate. If you have questions, please contact me.
Supply List
Please bring to class a paragraph you have written for the workshop segment. It does not need to be a well-done paragraph, and you do not need to understand what a paragraph is.

Also have a simple topic in mind that you could easily write a short paragraph about. Examples could be what your favorite color is and why, information about an animal you know, simple steps to complete a recipe, and so on.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I developed a love for grammar while in college when I finally understood WHY we have rules. The function of rules is to make writing clear and consistent. I love helping students learn how to use rules (and when to bend or break them) in order to communicate their ideas clearly and to make their voices heard.

I have taught English Composition at the college level and have tutored English for college students and middle schoolers. I encourage my students to stretch and to grow in order to reach their potentials. In some cases, I have helped students who began a class with D work to finish the class with B and A work.
