Class Experience

Young students will learn the art of paper rolling or quilling. It was a popular hobby in the 18th century.
Students will see traditional quilling designs from pictures, and also investigate patterns found in nature.
Using 1/4" wide and 9" long strips of colored paper, white glue and cotton swabs, students will create two basic shapes of quilling: the coiled circle and the tear drop.

They can then use these simple shapes to create cards for friends and family.
Arranging these quilled shapes into flowers, hearts or fantastic creatures is sure to delight the receiver! These cards would be perfect and easy to make for any occassion.

Older beginners may want to use a quilling tool during this introductory class. They may also use commercially cut paper that is 1/8" wide. I will try to keep the different age ranges in separate classes.

This is a one time class with the potential of more classes to come if students and parents are interested. Creative kids will love this ancient art form.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a licensed K-12 Gifted and Talented educator who is always on the look out for ways to keep creative kids engaged in learning. I found that students when taught the basics, even without the store bought tools, amazed me with their artistic creations. They added quilling to their toolboxes when they needed to relax. Gifted students tend to be highly achieving worriers who need dedicated time and activities to let their minds wander. Quilling is a great way to do this.
