Pandas and Koalas: Reading Short Vowels

Join us as we learn about pandas and koalas while we build our reading skills. An important part of learning how to read is being able to hear the individual sounds in words, which is part of phonemic awareness. In this class we build that skill by sorting pictures based on their short vowel sound. Do we need to put the bed in our basket with the short e, or in the basket with our short? Then we will help our panda change one letter of each word to make our picture. What letter needs to change to turn the word "big" into the word that matches our picture of a bag? After we work with several three-letter CVC words, we will finish our time with a matching game. The class is highly interactive and every students will have multiple opportunities to participate. Students will be most successful in this class if they already know all of the letter names and sounds. This class follows a structured literacy approach that focuses on phonemic awareness and phonics, not looking at the picture and guessing. If you have any questions about if this class is a good fit for your students, please reach out and ask. I'd love to help your child become a more confident reader!
