In this step-by-step watercolour painting class, students will learn to paint a cardinal on an evergreen branch. We will start with a pencil sketch of simple shapes to understand the realistic form of our bird. Then, the young artists will learn how to use watercolour paint techniques such as layering, stippling and dry brushing. The background will be painted with a wet-on-wet wash of blue watercolour. We will finish our paintings with creative pops of evergreen colour for our cardinal habitat. The students are welcome to share their paintings and their ideas with the class. My painting classes are filled with cheerful praise and positive energy. Watercolour is a wonderful art medium that encourages the development of both painting skills and creative expression. Every cardinal painted in our class is unique and full of personality! I use a second camera so that the students can follow the lesson process in a supportive atmosphere. I pause and chat as we go to keep an appropriate pace for all the artists. No experience in bird painting is needed, just an interest in exploring watercolour art. I always celebrate the different skills my students bring to class. They will all enjoy learning my tips and techniques for painting birds in our natural world.
