What's included

Homework
2-4 hours per week. Students are expected to read the assigned chapters, complete reading comprehension questions and vocabulary. The number of pagers varies based on the book. The homework should take about 2 hours to complete each week, depending on the reader. **Please contact the instructor for accommodations :).
Assessment
Each class students will play Blooket to check reading comprehension. Instructor will reach out if scores are below 70%.

Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 8
Back-to-School Special! Use code LITTLEB2S15 for $15 coupon. Not only is reading an essential life skill, but it can be a source of entertainment. In this course, middle school students dive into classic novels for this age group. 

Through completing class activities, students will practice reading comprehension skills, identifying plot events, describing characters, determining problems, defining vocabulary words, and recognizing themes in books. 

For each book, students will be given reading comprehension questions and vocabulary to complete while reading. The instructor will post video introductions for each new book, providing students with necessary background information. 

During each class session
*We will review reading comprehension questions, vocabulary, main plot points, characters, and discuss important quotes/themes/concepts from the reading. 
*Students will also play Blooket based on the assigned chapters.
Learning Goals
Students will gain knowledge of new vocabulary words by defining unknown words and participating in discussions.
Students will learn/review plot elements (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution) by participating in discussions.

Learning Needs
Reading comprehension questions and vocabulary keys are provided after each class. Pre-reading videos are available for each reading assignment. Message instructor for specialized accommodations :)

Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie features a little boy with cancer. Walk Two Moons includes the death of a mother and a stillborn baby The Outsiders includes violence (fighting) and a character kills someone The Giver mentions Stirrings (when characters have mature thoughts about the opposite sex) A Wrinkle in Time discusses other planets and life on those planets Blooket does not require an account to access.
Supply List
Students should have a copy of the book with them at home. These books can be found at the local library and online. Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie by Jordan. Sonneblick Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton The Giver by Lois Lowry A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle The instructor will be supplying background information videos, reading comprehension questions, and vocabulary graphic organizers.
