LEARNING GOALS To have students: --Employ reading skills and strategies to construct meaning from text --Describe the thoughts, opinions, and questions that arise as they read, view, or listen to a text --Evaluate explicit and implicit information to demonstrate awareness of the author’s style --Extend meaning by analyzing elements of various genres --Defend their interpretations of literature by producing in-depth, validated responses both verbal and written --Understand and appreciate that literature represents, recreates, shapes, and explores human thoughts and experiences
Mr. LeCara, an admirer of well-crafted tales, particularly delights in captivating narratives, especially science fiction. In this unique course, students delve into literary elements applicable to all stories while engaging with an author, gaining insights into character and plot development that inspire the creation of their own imaginative narratives. Uncover the keys to analyzing fiction, aligning with teacher and state assessment expectations with an enlightening and insightful exploration.

HOME ASSIGNMENTS | Each session's reading selection will include a writing component. o Session 1 --focus of the week: characters and characterization o Session 2 --focus of the week: major and minor conflict o Session 3 --focus of the week: setting o Session 4 --focus of the week: themes and properly providing text evidence to support answers2 - 4 hours per week outside of class

Learners will need the following to fully participate: --Access to/familiarity with the Outschool class page where session wrap-ups will be posted as well as stories and handouts. * NOTE: Story selections are of a length that they can be printed and read within a week. --Notebooks or loose-leaf paper, pens, pencils, and highlighters for various writing activities, note-taking, and annotation. --Optional: Additional materials might include sticky notes, index cards, or bookmarks for marking pages and jotting down important thoughts or ideas.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
