In this student driven, project-based English course, students will be given a monthly topic/theme, then choose their readings & films to analyze, then finish with a culminating literary project. New topics, themes, and projects each month.

Class experience

US Grade 9 - 12
In this course students will…
-determine theme;
-analyze plot and its various phases;
-examine how literary elements affect plot progression, assist in character development, and convey meaning, including: motif, symbol, foreshadowing, echoing, flashback, opposition, metaphor, irony, foil, choice of language; 

This course provides opportunities to for students to develop the following skills:
1.Explain the function of character.
2.Explain the function of setting.
3.Explain the function of plot and structure.
4.Explain the function of the narrator or speaker.
5.Explain the function of word choice, imagery, and symbolism.
6.Explain the function of comparison.
7.Develop textually substantiated arguments about interpretations of a portion or whole text.
Credentialed teacher with almost 20 years of experience in education. Certified AP English teacher, forensics coach(speech and debate), with an extensive background in drama.  I have taught in multiple states in the U.S. and spent three years teaching in China.  I am traveler, chef, poet, and storyteller, specializing in writing instruction, literary analysis, creative projects, and above all, building student teacher relationships.
Homework Offered
Students will select 3-6 works each month to read, listen to, or watch. Teacher shall provide a suggested list for each month's topic and theme; however, students are not limited to this list and may use any works of their choosing. The list will consist of novels, short stories, films, television shows, graphic novels, etc. In this fashion, students will essentially be designing their own curriculum. Students will be responsible for independent and guided analysis as the complete graphic organizers and answer probing questions to synthesize the works they have studied leading up to a culminating creative project each month.

Students will need a variety of supplies for their projects; however, these supplies will vary based on individual projects and are always at parent's discretion.
Students will be provided a list of suggested options each month; however, students are not required to choose from this list.  Furthermore, some options on this list may deal with more mature themes and may not be suitable for all learners. Parents are highly encouraged to review and screen all student choices. 
Sources will include a mixture of novels, films, short stories, comic books, television series and more. None of the sources are required.  Instead, a list of possible suggestions will be provided. Students may choose their own sources provided that they are in line with the monthly theme. Students will be provided a list of suggested options each month; however, students are not required to choose from this list.  Furthermore, some options on this list may deal with more mature themes and may not be suitable for all learners. Parents are highly encouraged to review and screen all student choices.
