Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 2
The class will be based on the Heggerty and PRESS reading intervention system.

I will be teaching the alphabet sounds and some simple digraphs such as sh, ch, th and ck.

✨During each class students will start with listening exercises where they will be listening to letter sounds and identifying words, changing/removing sounds to make new words and rhyming.

🌞Secondly, students will be using their whiteboards and doing word work. This is similar to the listening exercises, but they will be practicing with writing and identifying the letters visually. During this time there will be an introduced sound of the week (short vowels or digraphs sounds) that will be the focus of this work work time.

🍁Lastly, students will be introduced to a short text that is based off of the practiced letter sounds. Students will be asked to identify the focused letter sound in the text. Once they are finished, they will work on reading the text (sounding out the sentences). Afterwards, I will read it to them and ask some basic questions to check for understanding to practice their reading comprehension skills.

🌻Students should expect a multi-sensory lesson that uses listening, speaking, writing and kinesthetic learning opportunities to develop their understanding. Although the learning is slow-paced, the lessons themselves will be quick (around 10-15 minutes per activity with multiple questions). An ability to share their learning with the class orally is important for this class.

🖨️Resources to support students at home can be provided if requested. There will be no formal homework, nor will there be a formal assessment. However, a brief personalized written report will be given if requested.
Learning Goals
