What's included
Class Experience
Students in this flexible-schedule class will learn how to create optical art, meaning art that tricks the eye of the viewer! They will also do an artist study each week in which they will learn about a specific artist who created optical art. Since this class is a flexible-schedule format, you are not tied down to a specific time and day each week. A pre-recorded video lesson is posted to the classroom board, right here on Outschool each week. Each week's lesson video will include an artist study, where we talk about an artist and how he/she created their own optical art. The video will then move into a step-by-step guided optical art project. Students will be required to watch the video, do the project, and then post their project as a pdf file or picture file on the classroom board. Here is a description of what will be taught each week... Week 1: We will study the artist Bridget Riley. This week's project is titled pop out hand. Students will learn to draw a hand that appears to be popping out of the paper. Week 2: We will study the artist Victor Vasarely. This week's project is titled Flowing Ribbon. Students will learn to draw a ribbon that appears to flow around the page. Week 3: We will study the artist Jesus Rafael Soto. This week's project is titled The Impossible Square. Students will learn to draw a square that appears to never end. Week 4: We will study the artist Marina Apollonio This week's project is titled Sinking Hole. Students will learn to draw what appears to be a never ending hole on their paper. This class will also involve a great deal of interaction with both the teacher and other students. Along with the video lesson, each week there will be class discussion questions posted in the classroom board. Students are required to answer these questions and ask their own questions for the teacher and/or classmates. Students will also be required to post their own art project each week and comment on other students' artwork. Comments to other students must be positive! I will also be in the class discussion board to ask and answer questions throughout each week. This will keep the discussion going and students engaged in the class. Age listed is approximate. Since it is a flexible schedule class and students can work at their own pace age is not firm.
Learning Goals
At the end of this four week course, students will be able to explain what optical art is and use it in their own artwork. They will also have four unique pieces of their own artwork to be proud of!
