Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Alex Terrell. I have a Master of Arts in English, a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, and 8 years (and counting!) of experience teaching Essay Writing, English Literature and Creative Writing to learners of all ages. Some of my favorite classes to teach are Creative Writing for teens (ages 14-18) and College Application Essay Workshops (rising seniors; grades 11 + 12).

Having taught diverse and varying student populations, I have found one thing to be true across all demographics: we all have a story to tell. As a writing teacher and educator, my job is empower students to find their own voices, write about their experiences, and engage with core educational concepts. In any course I design learners can be sure they will walk away feeling excited, energizes, and empowered to tell their stories, write their worlds, and go confidently into their next educational goal.

My philosophy as a teacher is that students bring with them their own kinds of expertise, so if we all contribute what we know then we will have a wealth of knowledge to share with one another. I value my students voices and hope to teach them to value theirs as well.

In addition to my work as an educator I am also a mixed-media and fiber artist. I enjoy journal-making, bookbinding, fiber arts (crochet + embroidery) and jewelry-making.

My class offerings here on Outschool will be geared toward the following:

-Sci-fi + Fantasy Writing + other themed courses
-General Creative Writing Courses (teaching learners about things such as plot, characters, setting, etc.)
-Creative Writing Workshops (giving learners the opportunity to read and respond to each other's stories)
-College Essay Application Prep
-College Essay Application Drafting and Revising
-Reading + Discussion groups on classic literature (ex. Of Mice and Men, 1984, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc.)

*I also offer one-on-one tutoring, essay feedback, and short story feedback.*

Additionally, if there's anything you'd like me to teach or you have ideas, I love developing classes to suit learners' needs, so please reach out!
