US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner - Advanced Level
Through the guided drawing process, students will learn how to use simple lines and shapes to create three different types of optical illusions. My teaching style involves breaking the process down into smaller, easy-to-follow steps. I pace the class according to the needs of the students; if needed, I give fast finishers a break, allowing students who need more time to complete their work, the time to do so, and even then, finishing before class ends is NOT the objective. The examples in the picture are only suggestive; students may also request a particular favorite if time allows. My classes are intended to be fun, informative, and a safe place to take artistic risks and make mistakes--that is experimentation, which artists do all the time! At the end of class, students will be invited to share their creations no matter what their progress is. More detailed information regarding this class can be found in the syllabus.
Learning Goals
Students will learn tricks for creating three different optical illusions.
Syllabus
3 Lessons
over 3 WeeksLesson 1:
Introduction to Op Art/Optical Illusion 1
Students will be introduced to the style of Op Art and will be shown examples of how simple drawing and shading techniques lend themselves to optical illusion. We will begin our first drawing of a simple Op Art design using straight and curved lines, and two or more colors.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Optical Illusion 2
We will review/look at our art from last week, and will begin a new drawing of our hand that will end up looking like it is raising up off of a striped surface. Students may need time on their own to complete the drawing and color it.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Optical Illusion 3
We will draw one final optical illusion using elements of what was learned in previous classes and will use techniques with either colored pencils or markers (student choice) to get variations in light and dark colors. This lesson may not be completed by the end of class, so I encourage students to finish and upload their art for classmates to see!

As a licensed art teacher, I have developed techniques for breaking down drawing lessons into simple, easy-to-follow steps. Once we get the basics done, I give my students freedom to complete their project using their own imagination, thereby giving them the opportunity to take what I have taught them to a different, fun and creative level.
