Students will receive direct instruction in mathematics, starting with numeracy, daily. Practice work (at the time and for that afternoon) is assigned and assessed daily by the instructor, leading to the next class where it is reviewed, new material is taught, and new work is assigned. The curriculum followed is suitable for all third/fourth grade level students. Students receive all instruction, immediate feedback on practice work, and assessment by a certified Ontario teacher. Week of July 1st - Adding and Subtracting: - emphasis on UNDERSTANDING the why and how. In this way we also hit elements of place value and stronger students can move on to patterning, early algebra, and multiplication. Week of July 8th - Multiplication and Patterning: - students work through single digit multiplication problems. As students master this they are able to develop and expand patterns, including writing and solving pattern rules. Early algebra is again discussed. Week of July 15th - Mystery Math: Finding the nth Term - students enjoy solving puzzles in order to establish the pattern. This, in a fun way, reviews the three operations so far. It also provides an avenue from which to introduce division to the students... this opens up week 4's topics. Week of July 22nd: Fractions: Often Confused, it's Really Just Division - students see how fractions and division are irreversibly intertwined, which allows students to easily identify fractions and do fraction conversions.
