Assessment
No matter the lesson, I will be assessing the learner based on verbal and written feedback.Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 12
This is a one-on-one ongoing tutoring course in which you can "drive" the session by requesting skills or topics to be covered! We could work with one of your school assignments or I can pull from the many lessons I have at my fingertips after teaching for over 15 years! These may include writing craft lessons such as using detail, organization, hooks, thesis statements, conclusions, or using/explaining evidence. Reading lessons may include reading comprehension, finding and explaining evidence, identifying literary elements, determining conflict, theme, or characterization, or reading strategies such as making inferences or connections. Just a couple sample teacher-provided stand-alone lessons are below. Writing with Sensory Details Define sensory details, warm up with verbal exercise. Read a short descriptive mentor text provided by the teacher. Identify sensory details we notice and explain how they enhance the writing. Given a writing prompt, do a quick write using sensory details. Read aloud and identify sensory details in own writing. Revise to improve or add to the piece. End with call-to-action to continue noticing and practicing skill. Understanding Theme in Literature Discuss learner's favorite books/movies/games and identify what they're "about". Agree on a working definition of "theme", circle back to discussion to identify the themes of one or two of the stories. Distinguish between topic and theme. Read a short piece of fiction provided by the teacher together. Work together to determine the theme (vs. topic). If time, practice writing a response that explains the theme with evidence from the text. If you would like to book a multi-day course instead, I can work with your schedule to find a date and time that works best.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Massachusetts Teaching Certificate in English/Language Arts
Hi, I'm Beth! I have been teaching middle school ELA for over 15 years, and am certified for grades 5-12. Reading and writing are two of my greatest passions. I love books so much that I have even opened up my own pop-up bookshop!
My classes are all about supporting and guiding readers-writers-thinkers. We think about writing as a craft. We dig deep into meanings and connection. And, we celebrate good writing--whether our own or a favorite author's. My reading classes are steeped in discussion and help with comprehension, critical thinking, and evidence-based conclusions. Writing classes are interactive, using models and practicing writing and revising.
When I'm not teaching, I am busy hanging with my fam. I have two teenage girls (who keep me on my toes), and two cats whose hobbies are: sleeping in the sun, meowing for food, and chasing each other around the house. I enjoy traveling, hiking, weight-training, reading, and sharing books. One day I hope to write a children's book based on my cats, entitled, "Mr. Plumber and the Worm". Join one of my classes and ask me why!
