US Grade 5 - 8
In this ongoing class, your learner and I will work one-on-one to sharpen the English Language Arts skills like reading comprehension, writing, literary analysis, and grammar. I can also assist with study skills, organization, homework assignments, research papers and speeches. The course topics will be guided by the individual learner's needs so when you enroll your learner for the class be sure to indicate specific areas of focus for our sessions. The first session will include some assessment activities on your student's level and abilities so I can create individualized plans for future sessions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello there! My name is Liz and I am very excited to be an Outschool teacher.
I am passionate about helping my students set goals and build their knowledge and skills to work towards those goals. My specialties are teaching writing, reading comprehension, and literature to middle school and high school students. Additionally, I worked closely with college-age students for 13 years at several American universities. I have a heart for the young adult and love helping them prepare for the transition to life after high school and to develop life skills.
I offer classes about: writing, reading, grammar, literature, study skills, adulting/life skills, and a smattering of other topics I love including history, music, cats, cooking, travel and mysteries! Courses are interactive and offer a combination of direct instruction and opportunities for practice. My classes range in format from one-time offerings, multi-day courses, full semester classes, and ongoing courses surveying authors/poets/literary genres. I’m also eager to hear YOUR class suggestions!
In my classes, learners should expect to share their thoughts about their writing or what we are learning. They should be open to reflection about their work and trying new things. My goal is for students to learn something new in every class and to take away concrete skills and knowledge to integrate into their daily life.
Learning is an individualized process and I strive to apply the content to each student’s needs and interests. Therefore, I try to keep classes small. Additionally, I provide individualized feedback to every student to help them keep track of what they are learning and identify future areas of growth.
Professionally, I am a former middle school and high school Language Arts teacher and have experience teaching language arts, writing, basic computer skills and job search skills.
I have degrees in Secondary English Education, Postsecondary Higher Education, and Curriculum and Instruction.
I currently hold a Professional Teaching Certificate in Virginia (Language Arts, 6-8). Currently, I am a Curriculum Specialist with the US Government and I help create online language courses.
I live in Northern Virginia with my husband and two cats (who sometimes appear on camera!) In my free time I love to play the flute, sightsee all the wonderful sites Virginia has to offer, and cook.
