US Grade 4 - 5
In this twice weekly ongoing class, we will build on the fundamentals of math learned in grades K-3. Because this is an ongoing class, each week will present a new lesson that does not build on previous weeks. This is a year long course that is a great option for families who need a more flexible schedule. I like to engage the class in a discussion so I can assess where they are in their understanding of the concepts. I always try to get every learner involved in the class, and will encourage even the most shy students to participate at their own comfort level, although they are welcome to sit and observe if that makes them more comfortable. *I have a lot of experience with neurodivergent learners as a teacher and a mom, and am happy to work with you/them to ensure that they have an enjoyable class experience.* Learners are welcome to join for one week, several weeks, or several months! Because this is an ongoing class, learners will not "miss out" by missing a week of instruction, as we start from scratch each week. In each class we will start with a fun brain teaser or another quick warm up, and then an ice breaker/sharing time. I allow kids to share their pets, Lego creations, artwork, or something about them. We will then move on to a short lesson on the current topic. We will use word problems, manipulatives, drawing, writing, and discussion to practice the concepts. I will give each child the chance to participate and demonstrate their understanding by "teaching" the class how to do a problem. KAHOOT AND GIMKIT GAMES We will play review games every week on Kahoot and Gimkit. I will share a clickable link in chat and you will simply type in the game code that I give you to join the game. These games are super fun and easy to learn. If you have a separate device like a phone or iPad, it would be helpful, but you can also use the same device you are using for Outschool. OPTIONAL HOMEWORK I will provide one or two optional homework sheets after the first class each week. *Fall/Winter 2024* Week of Sept 9th ~ Place Value and Rounding Week of Sept 16th ~ Place Value and Rounding Week of Sept 23rd ~ Addition and Subtraction Week of Sept 30th ~ Addition and Subtraction Week of Oct 7th ~ Multiplication ~ Traditional Week of Oct 14th ~ Multiplication ~ Box Method Week of Oct 21st ~ Division w/ Remainders Week of Oct 28th ~ Division w/ Remainders Week of Nov 4th ~ Fractions ~ Comparing and Ordering Week of Nov 11th ~ Fractions ~ Converting to/from Mixed Numbers Week of Nov 18th ~ Fractions ~ Adding and Subtracting w/ Like Denominators Week of Nov 25th ~ Fractions ~ Adding and Subtracting w/ Unlike Denominators Week of Dec 1st ~ Converting Between Fractions and Decimals Week of Dec 8th ~ Converting Between Fractions and Decimals Week of Dec 15th ~ Geometry ~ Classifying Quadrilaterals Week of Jan 6th ~ Geometry ~ Area and Perimeter of Regular Shapes Week of Jan 13th ~ Geometry ~ Area and Perimeter of Irregular Shapes Week of Jan 20th ~ Geometry ~ Area and Perimeter of Irregular Shapes Week of Jan 27th ~ Geometry ~ Classifying Angles Week of Feb 3rd ~ Geometry ~ Classifying Triangles *Spring 2025* This class will run for the entire school year through at least June. Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from Old Dominion University
Hello! My name is April Moser, and I am a former 6th grade classroom teacher, specializing in math. I live in Virginia, USA, near Washington, D.C.
In 2006 I earned a Masters Degree in Education, and went on to teach upper elementary school, focusing on math at all levels. Since having my own children, I have moved to online teaching, and have taught over 500 students online in the last few years!
I have always enjoyed math, and I have created a lot of classes that make learning math more exciting for the students. Each of our brains work differently, and that is the foundation on which I build my lessons. In class, if there are three ways to solve a problem, we will try them all! That way, your learner has a much better chance of understanding and grasping the concept.
We play Kahoot and Gimkit games to get the kids excited about reviewing concepts, and I am always available to answer questions when needed.
I look forward to meeting and working with your learner!
