45 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
US Grade 7 - 9
During each 45-min session, we will: - Explore misconceptions related to Pre-Algebra, how to avoid them, and the problem solving process. - Practice newly introduced concepts. - Deepen your vocabulary through interactive games. Topics may include (but are not limited to): - understanding real numbers - estimating irrational numbers - scientific notation - proportional relationships - writing and graphing linear equations - properties of exponents - Pythagorean Theorem and more! Students are encouraged to fully participate in the activities presented in an effort to build self-confidence, enhance their critical thinking skills, and build mathematical fluency. Here, we are focused on the process that leads to understanding and not merely just the correct answer(s). Students should be willing to take chances, accept feedback, be open to learning from their mistakes and the mistakes of others.
Learning Goals
Students will further develop their Pre-Algebra skills and build conceptual understanding of the topics covered after a detailed and insightful discussion, followed by additional guided practice.

Desmos: used to practice graphing, analyzing graphs, and skills practice. Students will be given codes to complete activities and screen share will be used to display and analyze graphs.
Kahoot: used to practice and build vocabulary and practice skills/concepts taught in a timed/competitive format.
Khan Academy: used for additional practice via screen share. Participants will verbally respond and or type their responses in the Zoom chat.

Florida Teaching Certificate in Mathematics
Hi, my name is Ms. McKinnon but students often call me Ms. M-K! I'm a Florida native, Florida State University graduate (Summer 2009, BS in Pure Mathematics), and certified Math teacher. Over the past 10 years, I've taught everything from 6th grade math to Calculus. My favorite subjects include Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, and Statistics. Math has always been a fun and exciting subject to me primarily because I enjoy making connections and the problem solving process.
I believe complex ideas and content can be broken down into understandable chunks. Each subject or field has a language of its own that can be explained through everyday analogies and activities common to you. Learning is an ongoing, lifetime event. It looks different for each individual, requires a different level of effort for each individual, but can be accomplished by all. My mission is to help others see math as meaningful and relevant, and just how easy it can be with a little time and effort.
In my spare time I do math for fun, which is why I'm head over heels in love with card games! Any game that requires strategy and numbers, I'm all in! I'm excited to share my knowledge with the Outschool community and look forward to teaching and learning with you!
