This is a 1:1 tutoring session. What makes it unique is that I customize it to your child. We figure out where he / she is struggling and go from there. You receive feedback and recording after each session. Focus: Junior High Science

Class experience

US Grade 4 - 8
To ensure effective tutoring, the teacher suggests meeting 2x per week. Book additional recurring meetings after the initial purchase.
It depends on what he / she needs to learn. I use the time to teach missed skills / concepts and also to help the child organize his time and supplies so that ultimately less time is needed with a tutor. I help the child learn to look at the resources available and figure out his / her own answers.
I've been a full time junior high science teacher for 16 years. During that time I was responsible for teaching Earth, Physical and Life science. I designed the curriculum for, taught and led 2 different STEM after school programs. I've tutored my entire teaching career and now I support myself through teaching and tutoring online.

But more importantly to me is the testimonies from the parents of the students I have taught and tutored over the years. I taught in a low income school district for all of my formal teaching career and getting parents involved was extremely difficult. But I had some regulars that volunteered in my class often.

They noted (as well as current day parents) my strengths faster than I did. What they all have said is they appreciate that I will do whatever is necessary to help a child understand the concepts. I want them to succeed.

More importantly, I want to help him / her to develop resiliency and a "can do" attitude combined with attention to detail for excellent results. A teacher or parent won't always be around to help figure things out. If we can help them develop those skills, they'll be unstoppable.

I've had the opportunity to work with several different special needs students that I flat out told the parent I was not an expert in those areas and recommended she get someone else. However, she trusted me and her son (who has speech apraxia) improved so much that his teachers began commenting to his mom. We had worked on his verbal ability to summarize but it flowed over to his written summaries as well.

His sister stutters and his mom was so impressed with the success her son had she asked me to work with her daughter. Again, I told her that was not my area of expertise. She asked me to try anyways. Within 3 sessions she called me and asked what I was doing because her daughter had made more progress with me than she had with 3 years of meeting with her speech pathologist!

Another testimony comes from my sister (and you know how hard it can be to get family to vouch for you!). Her 7th grade son has ADHD and has been struggling staying focused in classes and his grades have been affected. After our tutoring sessions, several of his teachers also commented and even his principal reached out to me thanking me for working with him.

I have numerous addition testimonies from parents I could list off (and we can talk more in-depth about if you'd life), but they range from elementary to adult learners. When I work with someone, I want them to be successful.

I want your child to succeed.

82% of our children in America's public schools are attending public schools that are FAILING.

We can work together to make sure YOUR child is not one of those children who is failed by that system.
Homework Offered
Depending on what we're studying I will assign a video to be watched, an article to read for further understanding or a reading passage with questions. If a family is requesting that I teach rather than tutor, I will be using Khan Academy as a starting point and expect the assignments to be completed between classes so that class time can be used for questions and review.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
If desired, yes, assessments can be used (or practice to improve assessment scores). Sometimes I'm hired to help a child prepare for the science portion of a state assessment and we use different online assessments to help the child get used to those type of test questions. It really depends on what I'm hired to help him / her with.
Grades Offered
It is customized so it definitely supports unique learning needs. I do whatever is necessary to help the child learn the material: Verbal, Auditory, Hands-on, Technology ... whatever he / she responds to best.
No pre-reqs
 2 files available upon enrollment
Child will need a device that has video and audio capability so that we can communicate on the zoom. It would be great if that device is not a school-issued laptop because often the child can't "share" his / her screen. However, we can make it work with a school-issued laptop. If supplies are needed they will be commonly found around the home.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
If there's anything that will be upsetting or scary in something we're using or I assign, I'll mention it in the class notes. I don't anticipate anything, especially since we're on the Out School platform and are limited and monitored on what can be used.

Out School has requested that I explain how I use the following sites:

Read Works - It depends. I mostly use it for reading comprehension, but have also used it when helping a student with speech apraxia learn to verbally summarize more concisely and occasionally with a student that stutters to practice talking without extra sounds. Read Works is a site of articles that also have vocabulary words and questions. There's also a spot for written summaries for the student. It can also be used for homework.

Khan Academy - This is a website that has a variety of content area available. Each new major concept has a corresponding video with a man's voice explaining the concept and it is simultaneously being illustrated / drawn in comic form in front of the student. Some home schooling parents actually use it as their curriculum because it is very thorough while also being entertaining. I have used it to teach math skills, for reading comprehension practice and also for teaching coding. It can also be assigned as homework.

You Tube - I love to use short YouTube videos to further explain a concept. I sometimes assign a video as "homework".

Kahoots - This is a website an app where a user can use pre-made "Kahoots" to study from or can make their own. They have both a "solo" and a "host" option which allows the user to host a live Kahoot game or practice on their own. For my Kahoot Review sessions, I am hosting a live game with the participants.

IXL- This is a website commonly used in most public schools today and your child may already have a login ID and password to practice in certain content areas. If not, if we meet regularly and if it looks like IXL will be beneficial, I'll purchase access for your child and assign a login and ID. Then your child will practice with me in the session, take an assessment using the app and / or practice on his / her own in the desired content area. What's cool about IXL is that it adjusts to the user's skills and so helps the user improve through repeated practice in the desired area.

TestingMom.com - This is a site to help the user prepare for specific standardized tests. If I use this site, we will have discussed the need to prepare for a standardized test. To me, this site is one of the best out there because it compiles all the national tests and you are able to practice similar test questions that may be asked on that type of test.

Wikipedia - This will be used as an occasional reference, although it's in wiki format so that will be noted to the child (anyone can update it and it's not reliable as a source).

Quizlet - I might make a quiz using this or ask the child to create a quiz.

CK12 Flexbooks - We may use this as reference. I've never used this before, but it was recommended as an option by Out School so I'll check into it.

When one of these sites is used, typically I will share my screen or the student will share their screen so that we can both see what is on the site. Recordings will be sent after each session so the parent will see exactly what we were doing while on that website.

The only warning I can think of is that Khan Academy, You Tube and Read Works content all lean left politically and so that sometimes seeps into the content. However, I will do my best to avoid that.
