Class Experience
US Grade 8
I will be teaching Grade 8 Math. The class will include a lecture component and then practice component. Other worksheets and activities may also be used in class. I may use games, slides, video, images, manipulatives to teach the material. I will be using the interactive whiteboard on Zoom so students are encouraged to provide their share their responses using a mouse, in the chat box or using a drawing tablet. Completion of Grade 7 is required for the Grade 8 section. Please note, the curriculum moves very fast. =============================================================== Prerequisite: Completion of Grade 7 Math Week of (June 17) Grade 8A Unit 1 Exponents and Scientific Notation covers: power and the order of operation, powers with negative bases, laws of exponent Week of (June 24) Exponents Scientific Notation covers: law of exponents, scientific notations, significant notations, word problems Week (July 1) Unit 2 Geometry covers: geometric transformation and congruence, reflections, translations, dilations, similar figures Week (July 8) Geometry covers: corresponding angle, angle sum of a triangle, exterior angles, volumes of prisms, volume of cylinder, volume of pyramids, volume of cones, volume of spheres, word problem, Week (July 15) Unit 3 Linear Equations covers: distributive property, equations, combining like terms, word problems Week (July 22) Linear Equations covers: simplifying linear equations, age and coin, equations with fractions, formulas, percent word problem, applications of linear equations Week (July 29) Unit 4 Introduction to Functions covers: functions, linear functions and the rate of change, modeling linear relationships Week (Aug 5) Unit 4 Introduction to Functions covers: describing functions, comparing functions, word problems Week (Aug 19) Grade 8B Unit 5 Graphing Linear Equations covers: graphing proportional relationships, slope, slope intercept equations, word problems Week (Aug 26) Graphing Linear Equations Cover: write slope intercept equations, horizontal and vertical lines, standard form, parallel and perpendicular lines, application problems Week (Sept 2) Unit 6 Irrational numbers and Pythagorean theorem covers: square roots, irrational numbers, cube roots, fraction to decimals, decimal to fractions Please note: The topics will not cycle back to the beginning and new topics will be introduced in upcoming weeks in this order.

Parental Guidance
We may use Google Forms, Google Docs, Google Slides and Google Sheets, for teaching our class and for informal assessments during our class. Student may require a Gmail account to use them. Google Docs and Google Slides may be used to present the notes while Google Forms and Google Sheets may be used for informal assessment.
We will use Zoom Screen Share to show the notes and also allow student to annotate on the notes. Student can also participate by typing their response in the chat in Zoom.

I have over 17 years of teaching experience in classrooms and in one to one tutoring settings. I believe in lifelong learning. I graduated with a Bachelor of Education in Elementary with a Math and Science specialization. I also completed a Diploma in Early Years Education, Certificate in Kindergarten, Diploma in Special Education, and Certificate in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language). I have worked with student ages from Pre-K to Grade 12.
I believe every student can learn and each student may learn differently. My job as an educator is to teach students and provide them with new challenges that stimulate their own thinking and inspire them to enjoy learning.
