1-2 hours per week. Though home activities will vary, during the reading of "Grendel," Makai can expect to read one to two chapters each week. What readings will take place during the reading of "Aeneid" have yet to be determined.Assessment
Progress will be assessed as follows: --Learner Questions: Learners will be encouraged to ask questions about the text being read, which can help assess their comprehension of the material. --Discussion: The instructor will facilitate discussion about the text, encouraging learners to share their thoughts and ideas, thus assessing each learner's ability to analyze and interpret the material. --Inferences: Learners will be asked to make inferences based on the text to assess their ability to draw conclusions and make connections between different parts of the material. --Personal Connections: Learners will work through ways to connect with the characters on a personal level, and assess their ability to empathize and relate to the material. --Articulating Importance: When reading nonfiction, the instructor may ask learners to articulate why the material is important and why others should care about it, assessing their ability to analyze and synthesize information.Class Experience

OVERVIEW Makai's parents would like to schedule ongoing private one-on-one sessions, whereby student/teacher meet once a week so Makai can read classics and engage in higher-level conversations. HOW STUDENT WILL LEARN | TEACHER'S TEACHING STYLE Learning will take place through a one-on-one customized approach to “Mastering the Art of Reading," specifically "Strategies for Understanding Fiction" and "Summarizing and Analyzing Texts." Some sessions may include, but are not limited to, slides, readings (aloud and silent), worksheets, reflections, role-playing, and discussion. Makai will have a chance to learn, practice, and then demonstrate his learning during this time by meeting agreed benchmarks established with/by all parties before the start date. TOPICS COVERED DURING READING OF LITERATURE --Strategies for Understanding Fiction --Summarizing and Analyzing Texts HOW STUDENT WILL INTERACT WITH TEACHER Student/parents will have access to the teacher 24/7. Makai will be expected to share his experiences before, during, and after attempted strategies. PROPOSED MAY - JULY SCHEDULE: One-hour sessions Thursdays at 10:30 AM Pacific Time FIRST EIGHT SESSIONS FIRST READING SELECTION: "Grendel" by John Gardner Session 1: Intro | Background | Chapter 1 Session 2: Review/Discussion of Chapter 1 | Chapters 2-3 Session 3: Review/Discussion of Chapters 2-3 | Chapters 3-4 Session 4: Review/Discussion of Chapters 3-4 | Chapters 5-6 Session 5: Review/Discussion of Chapters 5-6 | Chapters 7-8 Session 6: Review/Discussion of Chapters 7-8 | Chapters 9-10 Session 7: Review/Discussion of Chapters 9-10 | Chapters 11-12 Session 8: Review/Discussion of Chapters 11-12 | Wrap-Up SECOND READING SELECTION: "The Aeneid" by Virgil Note: Virgil's work consists of twelve books.
