Assessment
I will provide feedback for the creations, feedback will be positive but honest.Class Experience
We will cover how to create volumetric and 2D art in Minecraft. The class will start with a simple challenge (example: build a pixel portrait of your favorite video game character). Completing the challenge will be rewarded with feedback from me and hearty praise! Once the session starts, students will be free to explore the world, begin the challenge, or go off and do their own thing. Students are encouraged (but not required) to take my programming class to learn how to program the agent using block-based coding. My plan for this course is to host weekly themed challenges that students can choose to participate in (or not!); the themed challenge will require completing a task in-game with creativity and/or efficiency in constructing whatever you build to meet the challenge. I encourage all players to share their screen as they build so that I can see how they did it! ⇢ Week of Friday, April 8: Creative Survival Homes ⇢ Week of Friday, April 15: Painting Pixel Portrait Picassos ⇢ Week of Friday, April 22: Math and Art ⇢ Week of Friday, April 29: Architecture and Design ⇢ Week of Friday, May 6: Things that grow ⇢ Week of Friday, May 13: Incorporating programming into your art with the Minecraft Agent ⇢ Week of Friday, May 20: Stairways to Heaven ⇢ Week of Friday, May 27: Constructing Video Game Character Michaelangelos ⇢ Week of Friday, June 3: Ancient Cultures ⇢ Week of Friday, June 10: Future Cultures Each week I can post a copy of the world to the class page if requested so players can download it on their own. I will maintain the copy of the world used each week.
Learning Goals
How to use 3D coordinates (x, y and z axis), how to use commands, how to create things in three dimensions.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Students occasionally use bad language, bad language is relative, I will encourage students to use language that is appropriate for their peers and me, but will also be culturally sensitive. Not everyone has the same definition of "bad" language, so if yours is very conservative (which is totally fine) keep in mind that mine is not conservative because I have students from all over the world. I will enforce the rule that sharing usernames that let students play together outside of class must go through parents as best I can, but students are creative and I know they can figure out ways to share this information so that it is impossible for me to track (for example, they can put their username on a sign in the game and then destroy the sign).
Finally, a note on privacy online and the tools used in this class:
Minecraft education edition is used in this class. This is a special version of Minecraft that runs about one version behind Minecraft: Bedrock. It has special tools that make it useful for a classroom environment. It is also COPPA compliant: https://educommunity.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/360047118972-User-Privacy-and-Minecraft-Education-Edition additionally it is 1 dollar a month, this cost is incorporated into the cost of this class.
