Using the overall theme: “Oh, Freedom!”, students will learn how one can be free within themselves while working within an immovable framework of circumstance, rules or injustices. They will cultivate empathy for others and explore emotion by using visual art.
As an African- American, I have always had a passion for Black History. As a trained singer and musician, I've also had a passion for several music genres, from Gospel to Opera. This course began as a 10-minute History of Spirituals in word and song, much like Jimmy Fallon's History of Rap series. From those humble beginnings, came an Arts Residency at a middle school in Southern NJ for which a 10-part curriculum was written in only 48 hours! Since then, some manner of this course has been taught to students of all ages, all over the world, in-person and here on Outschool.
