*Please note that I prefer students to have their videos on during class time and keep chatroom conversation to a minimum. WARNING: Google images of dissected animals will be shown to students in order to learn the anatomy of the animal. This may be sensitive for some students. Day 1: What is Oceanography? Shell Study Lab _Students will learn the characteristics of an ocean. _Students will learn what inhabits shells. _Students will learn to identify several basic shells. Students will learn what is Oceanography through questions, discussions, and charts. They will learn how to identify different seashells and what inhabits them. A sketchbook is recommended for drawing some of the shells Mrs. Valdez will display. Students will be given an oral quiz after reviewing different specimens. Plus, students may bring three of their own seashells for a show and tell at the end of our study to share with each other. This class will spark their interest to start their own seashell collection of their own! There are optional printable sheets for taking notes, learning to label the five oceans, and coloring different shells. See attached. Day 2: What is an Echinoderm? Starfish Anatomy Lab _Students will learn the characteristics of an Echinoderm. _Students will learn the external Anatomy of a Starfish. _Students will learn the internal Anatomy of a Starfish through images. Students will learn about Echinoderm and their habitats and their anatomy through images. They will learn what characteristics they display and why. They will color the anatomy of the starfish on a downloadable worksheet. Day 3: Sea Life Museum Lab _Students will learn about the animals that live on the ocean surface. _Students will learn about the plants that live on the ocean surface. Students will observe coral and a preserved seahorse from the teacher's collection. Plus, botanicals that wash up on the beach. They will get to see so many wonderful preserved specimens to spark their interest and want them to learn more about the ocean. A sketchbook is recommended for students to draw their observations. I will present the materials needed for our last class which will be a lab. If you would like to do this lab along with the teacher. *This lesson may have a 3-4 minute video from Youtube to further the understanding of the lesson from which they will take notes on specific vocabulary words. Day 4: Students will learn about how a fish swims by viewing or participating in the Swim Bladder Experiment. Materials: Pitcher of water, a soft plastic water bottle, and a packet of ketchup. *This lesson may have a 3-4 minute video from Youtube to further the understanding of the lesson from which they will take notes on specific vocabulary words.

WARNING: I will be showing dissected and preserved animal pics. If your child is sensitive to this, I suggest you not enroll them.
In the fourth lab class, if your child would like to follow along, they may need your assistance to tie a knot on the balloon and pour oil into it.
Youtube VIDEOS: Some lessons may have a 3-4 minute video from Youtube to help enhance the learning experience. I do cue the videos but at times there may be ads that are beyond my control.

I love teaching oceanography! I have a wide collection of specimens and shells. Having been a Biology teacher for thirty-five years has allowed me to teach students about ocean life. Every summer, I offer Oceanography summer camps for kids. I now want to offer this same experience on Outschool.
