In this 4-day camp, students will learn how to make their own oboe reeds.

 Week 1
Lesson 1
Introduction and Tying a Reed
We'll go over each tool we'll be using, what it's used for, and how to use it. We'll also go over the parts of the reed, how each part contributes to our overall sound, and the measurements we'll be using for each. We'll then go through how to tie a reed.
Lesson 2
Tying a Reed (continued) and Rough Scraping
We'll start with any questions about tying, and then go on to the next step of rough scraping the reed.
Lesson 3
Rough Scraping (continued) and Finishing a Reed
We'll start with any questions or concerns about the previous steps. We'll then clip open the reed and go through the steps needed to be able to play on the reed.
Lesson 4
Review
During this class, I'll repeat any of the steps requested and answer any questions. I'll also go around the class and double check each student's progress. Time permitting, we'll also go over sharpening the reed knife.
This class is taught in English.
  • By the end of the class, students should feel confident in the basic steps to create a reed.
2 - 4 hours per week outside of class

Details: Students should practice the steps we've gone over in class.
Assessment

Details: Students will be asked to share their progress throughout the class. This may include showing the class their work or asking/answering questions.
To get the most out of the class, learners should have a basic reed making kit, plus several pieces of shaped cane, and several staples. An example of a kit containing all the necessary supplies can be found here: https://www.mmimports.com/product/mmi-oboe-reed-making-kit/
Students will be using a sharp knife throughout the class. Parent should assess their student's readiness to handle sharp objects before joining the class. Parents may wish to be available during class to assist their student while using those objects.
