Together we will read Number the Stars, a work of historical fiction by Lois Lowry. We will meet the Rosens who are a Jewish family trying to escape Denmark during World War II. Our main character, Annemarie Johansen is best friends with Ellen Rosen. The Johansen family does everything they can to hide and save the Rosens and we will follow them as they risk everything for safety. Students will be responsible for completing the reading ahead of time. During the recorded lesson class, I will discuss the significance of the readings, and put emphasis on the Righteous Among the Nations - those who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust. Students will be responsible for taking part in classroom activities together which are outlined below. They will also complete weekly reflection questions on the reading which they are welcome to share with me and other learners. I will give feedback privately. Week 1: Chapters 1 - 5 - Meeting the families - Geography of Denmark - Major events leading up to our book - Classroom activity: Together we will create a map of the area Week 2: Chapters 6 - 8 - Righteous Among the Nations - Virtual field trip to Yad Vashem - Classroom activity: Sharing a story from the Yad Vashem website Week 3: Chapters 9 - 12 - Resistance throughout Europe - Classroom activity: researching and sharing a story of resistance Week 4: Chapters 13 - 17 - Why was Sweden safe? - Classroom activity: Shared reflections
