Class Experience

Young learners require a gradual shift in their thinking from the concrete to the abstract -- especially when it comes to mathematical concepts. This course is designed as a fun and engaging opportunity to build mathematical skills in addition while moving from the concrete representation of a number story in pictures to a more abstract representation of the story with ten frames and equations. Students will watch a number story, listening for the numerical indicators of quantity. Together we will discuss with one another what we heard in the story, identifying the numbers representing the quantities described in the story and the words in the story that indicate the operation of addition that we will apply. We will then use different strategies to show our mathematical thinking -- drawing a picture and using ten frames, number lines and number bonds. We will discuss with one another the merits of each strategy used. Students should already be familiar with the idea that numerals represent quantities and be agile in their use of the numerals 0-10.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to identify the numerical indicators of quantity in a number story and the words in the story that indicate addition. Students will then apply a strategy to solving the number story.
