US Grade 3 - 5
In this one-time class learners answer 5th Grade Math questions while playing a series of short online games. During the games learners build their math confidence and improve their mental math fluency, often without even noticing they are challenging themselves. Elements of chance enable learners of all abilities the chance to win a game, even against stronger mathematicians. As the Games Master I encourage, support and challenge all learners throughout the class. We play private games on the educational learning platform Blooket. Learners answer multiple choice questions that I have specifically created for Outschool learners. Many of the games include power ups and chance events that ensure that all learners have the opportunity to snatch victory no matter what their math attainment is. The games usually last between 5 and 10 minutes. After each game I assess the accuracy and number of questions answered by each learner. I use this data to select the games and question sets based on the learners who attend each class and will also pause the games to teach a key concept as required. Throughout the games I give a running commentary on the leaderboard and, during some games, encourage learners to unmute their microphones to add to the atmosphere and tension of the game. This class does not require learners to have their cameras on (except for the initial safeguarding check) therefore it is ideal for reluctant and emerging mathematicians who like to remain anonymous as their learn. Although cameras might be off I am constantly checking engagement and will check in with learners and let their adults know if they chose not to engage. While the games are, essentially, competitions I find that there are always a wide range of winners across all the ability levels. A laptop or desktop computer is better than an iPad or tablet for this class because learners will need to see both their personal 'question/play' screen (a browser window) plus the 'master' screen I share in Zoom. Learners on iPads can toggle between the two screen and throughout a game I will always give a commentary on the leaderboard so they don't miss out on any of the 'action'. Learners can always play on Blooket and Kahoot! as a guest and no software or download is required. However, if learners do sign up for a free Blooket account then each game earns them tokens which they use to unlock common, uncommon and rare Avatar Blooks.

An unconventional and effective educator living an incredible life with a passion for making learning fun.
As a Teacher of Math, Science and English as a Foreign Language, Hannah has worked in schools for over 15 years.
Hannah's pronouns are (she/her/hers)
Hannah teaches 1-2-1 classes in Math (for ages 8 to 16). She also teaches Bootcamps and Escape Rooms teaching Multiplication, Division and Fractions plus a selection of flexible schedule (FLEX) classes.
She is also TEFL qualified and loves working with learners who are looking to practice and improve their understanding of spoken English.
Hannah believes that we all learn best when we are having fun, her classes are highly interactive, personalised and often incorporate reflection as a tool to promote deeper learning.
Getting to know her students and how they learn best is very important to Hannah and, particularly for longer courses, Hannah will spend time both online and offline finding out about the personal preference of the individuals that join her on her learning journeys.
She knows that no two children are the same and there is no such thing as a 'typical' learner. Instead she uses her curiosity to discover what gets the best of each and every learner. Her youngest son was diagnosed with autism in 2019.
While usually to be found in the United Kingdom, Hannah spent 2016/17 adventuring around the world spending time with interesting people and seeking enriching learning experiences for herself, her husband and her teenage sons.
Hannah has appeared on the British Television show Ready Steady Cook, where she was a 'green pepper', cooked four desserts in 20 minutes and her celebrity chef rode her unicycle during the filming.
Hannah is a Qualified Maths Teacher with a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from North Wiltshire SCITT in England, is TEFL qualified and teaches part-time in a Bricks and Mortar Secondary School in the South of England. She has a First Class Masters Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering with Honours (MEng Hons) from Newcastle University in the United Kingdom. She started her career as a Wastewater Engineer but quickly learnt that she was happiest in front of a class full of students. For 16 years Hannah trained adults to use the latest technology at work. Since studying for a professional coaching qualification, Hannah has become an expert in the field of Leadership Coaching and has worked extensively in schools across the UK.
During UK School term time I teach on Outschool Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursday, Fridays plus multi-day classes on other days.
