Northern Lights and Polar Bears to Paint

Class Experience

This single-course offering will begin with a brief overview of the Northern Lights - what they are, how the colors are produced and why they "dance", and Polar Bears - their habitat, what they eat, and their size (huge!). 
Learners will learn about Northern artist Ted Harrison using a brief power point and lecture.  We will look at Ted Harrison’s most famous children’s book which features his artwork.  As a class we will answer the question, “What inspired Ted Harrison?” and then ask ourselves, “What do we see around us that gives us ideas for our own artwork?”
Following these brief introductory activities, we will paint our own picture of the Northern Lights in the style of Ted Harrison.  Learners will follow me step by step to create their own painting. We will draw and cut out our own picture of a polar bear to complete our Northern scene.

Learning Goals

Students create a landscape picture of the Northern Lights in the style of artist Ted Harrison.  
Students create a picture of a Polar Bear.
Students know sources of ideas such as observations, feelings, and books, and will understand that artists can be influenced by culture and place.  
Students gain basic facts of the Northern Lights and Polar Bears.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
All materials and resources are suited to and appropriate for elementary aged students. Parents may want to be present to assist with cutting and/or painting depending on needs/wants of learner.
Supply List
Paint set – tempera, craft, or acrylics (please use any type of paint you may have.  If you are buying paints a simple, kid's paint set will work well).  
Paint brush – 3/8” or ½” flat preferred but any paintbrush will work.
Paper – try to find paper thicker than printer paper if you can, such as card stock or watercolor paper. It should not be shiny and must be white. 
One sheet of white paper for the polar bear - printer paper or craft paper will work.
Cup and water for rinsing brush.
Small sponge for blotting brush.
Black sharpie – medium or wide tip.
Pencil.
Scissors.
Glue - white glue or glue stick.
Newspaper or piece of fabric (drop cloth) to protect table surface.
Painting shirt/t-shirt to protect clothes.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hello!  My name is Laurel Irving Piot.  My students call me Ms. Irving.
I am a certified teacher in my province of Saskatchewan in Canada.  I hold Bachelor and Masters degrees in Education.  
It has been a privilege to teach all grades in Kindergarten to Grade 8/eight grade and I have worked with international students in public schools, at summer camps, and on-line.  I am the recipient of provincial and national awards for teaching and school leadership.
Currently I work in schools with University students who are learning to be teachers. 
I very much enjoy teaching art and supporting students in learning techniques and how art connects us to ourselves, our communities, and the world.
Classes I enjoy teaching are painting projects featuring the Northern Lights, Polar Bears and Inukshuks (that’s a cool word!), beginning pottery, how to be a pen pal, and for older students, how to scale up your side gig as an instructor/coach/tutor by learning how to be a great teacher.
Parent and students have shared with me that they appreciate that I listen to them, support their learning by using multiple strategies, and provide individualized opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning.  
My philosophy of teaching and learning is that the classroom be a safe place, a place where they have access to quality education experiences, and that it is a fun place to be.  I love Broadway musicals and have been known to break into song during class when inspired by something the students have done.  There is a song for everything!
