US Grade 2 - 5
This one-time, 50 minute class will begin with an introduction to Norse culture (modern day Scandinavia, especially Norway), including the role of mythology in their society. Then, we'll overview the iconic gods, goddesses, and stories of Nose mythology, including Thor, Loki, the Valkyrie, and Ragnarok. We'll also touch on how the themes of these stories reflect their daily life, culture, and religion. We'll use movie clips to compare modern versions of the mythology, including Marvel's Avengers, Rick Riordan's Magnus Chase series, and The Lord of the Ring. Finally, we'll answer the question: why are these stories from thousands of years ago still important today? Students are encouraged to engage and ask questions, but are welcome to passively absorb if they prefer. Optional Homework: Write a ~1 paragraph reflection for knowledge retention. Finally, I recommend checking out my Teacher Profile, especially my Teaching Philosophy section, to make sure this is a fit for your student. I also offer this as a multi-week course on World Mythology: https://outschool.com/classes/world-mythology-in-popular-culture-greek-norse-japanese-egyptian-hinduism-bKUIqK1o and as a Self-Paced Class: https://outschool.com/classes/mythology-in-popular-culture-greek-norse-japanese-and-egyptian-btSI90jn#usu529M6QA if your student prefers one of those methods of instruction.
