In this 5 week course, students will look at text evidence from multiple texts and use that text evidence to combine information from those texts.

Class Experience
This class series is entitled, "Nonfiction Matters," because nonfiction is of growing importance as kids get older. During students' 4th grade year, 50% of their reading should be from expository text . By the end of high school, 70% of a student's required reading will be nonfiction. Many students are not equipped with the skills needed to comprehend difficult nonfiction texts. The focus of this 5 week class will be on combining information from multiple texts. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.8 Explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.9 Integrate information from two texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably.
I am an experienced elementary teacher and reading specialist.
Students will be given any unfinished work for homework. Most students will need time to work on their essays at home (during week 5), since we will spend most of the class time doing the research and planning of the essay. I will also be giving two standards based assessments for homework.
2 files available upon enrollmentI will provide printable pdfs, but students may also complete the work on notebook paper.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be assessed informally through discussion and answering questions. They will also be assessed through verbal and written responses.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
All material is appropriate for upper elementary students.
