Homework
1 hour per week. Students will use scholarship search tips and receive assistance in compiling a personal scholarship list.Class Experience
Each week will feature a short video presentation, a handout (Google Doc), and scholarship links. Week 1 Students will receive tips on finding less competitive scholarships and instructions on using a spreadsheet or an electronic calendar to track criteria and deadlines. Students will receive a working "scholarship checklist." Students will interact with other learners by introducing themselves in the Outschool classroom, sharing their interests, schools they're interested in, potential majors, and passions. Interaction: Students will choose one or more posted scholarships to apply to or select a scholarship of their finding. Students will collaborate through a shared Google Doc to share scholarship finds. Week 2 Students will receive guidance on "finding their best stories" to create personal essays and college application essays that can be tweaked and reused for multiple scholarship applications. Students will begin thinking of persons who'd they'd like to write recommendation letters. Students will interact by sharing their own essay ideas, giving feedback to other learners, and receiving feedback from the instructor and students. Interaction: Students will use Nearpod's collaborate board Jamboard to share 1. Unique passions. 2. Authentic life lessons 3. Captivating intros to essays. Peers will review and comment on submissions. Week 3 Students will receive guidance on wording descriptions of their extracurricular activities, hobbies, and academic accomplishments to highlight them on a sample college application. Students will share their worded descriptions in the classroom and give and receive feedback. Students will provide updates on scholarships they are currently applying for and/or scholarships they've added to their spreadsheet. Interaction: Students will use Nearpod's collaborate board to practice detailing their extracurricular activities and hobbies by using specific details. Peers will post questions to help their classmates share more details. Week 4 Students will review their scholarship calendar, scholarship checklists, recommendation letters or requests, write thank you notes to use for scholarship committees and persons who wrote recommendation letters and add additional scholarships to their search. Interaction: Students will complete the collaborative scholarship document and be able to continue adding to it on their own.

Students will find at least five scholarships for which they are eligible to apply.

I'm a mom of a college sophomore who hasn't taken any loans and a mom of a rising high school senior who is starting her journey into the No Loan College Zone™. I started the No Loan College Zone™ to encourage high schoolers and college students to use resources other than loans to fund higher education. Results will vary.
