Welcome to the Writer's Toolbox! Single session discussion classes here to help students develop and refine their creative writing skills while expanding the depths of their imaginations. In this genre studies class, we talk about horror, the genre designed to pray on our greatest fears. A timeless genre that has morphed and changed throughout the years. Everyone has something that keeps them up at night, and horror is the perfect genre to turn those fears into art. This is an open structured class. We'll start with introductions and discuss our favorite things about horror and creative goals. Depending on what topics come up, will determine what lectures, tips, and discussion points I'll go into. Lessons can range from visual art styles, filmmaking tips, how to create a proper horror "monster", and anything else that may pop up. The last part of the class will be open for students to share ideas, get more specific advice on the things they may be working on, or just discuss things they still want to see and explore with horror.
Learning Goals
Students will get to learn the basics of storytelling while also learning some fun things about the history of horror.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
We are talking horror so we'll be talking about things considered horrendous. Though we'll go through and see some visually scary images, I will be staying away from showing anything overtly gory or sexual in nature. These topics can and will be discussed if brought up, but nothing too graphic will be displayed in class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Not only have I been a professional writer and filmmaker for two decades now, but I also happen to be a genre specialist. I co-founded a production company that was designed to create content in every and all genres and therefore had to learn everything I could about every genre that came our way.
Horror, unsurprisingly, came up a lot. So, there's a lot I know, and a lot I have to share about the genre.
