Class Experience

What will be taught: The basics of how certain parts of the internet actually work including: where the data lives, how data is broken down into small pieces, how data travels so fast as light, electrical, and radio signals, how devices are connected, how a web browser makes the request for the file and how it is put back together.

Structure: 55 minute class

Teaching Style: Quick introduction of concepts and then hands-on demonstrations with students following along and asking questions. After every explanation there will be a short hands-on exercise showing what is actually happening. We will definitely see it to believe it.

Requirements: Students need a web browser, should be able to navigate the web, and be able to interact with the exercises. The best experience is to have multiple screens or devices so that students can watch the shared screen on Zoom and follow along on their own in a web browser.
Learning Goals
I want students to get exposure to what different computer technologists do at work and complete hands-on activities that simulate actual technology job tasks. The goal is to develop their basic computing skills, learn something about how computers work, have fun, explore a new tech world together, and attempt to foster a deeper interest in technology.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I teach by building and embrace the "maker culture" that has learners experimenting and creating with the concepts presented to get an interactive "hands-on" experience.

I really enjoy teaching and am passionate about technology. I've taught for 15 years in a post-secondary technology classroom on various topics such as how the internet works, software development, cybersecurity, careers in tech, and information technology.

I'm currently an AWS Educate Cloud Ambassador with Amazon, attend multiple tech conferences to stay up to date with current trends, and am always building something new with tech.

I had great opportunities when I was young to learn about how computers work and it turned into an extremely rewarding career for me. I hope to generate some of that same curiosity and excitement that I felt as a young learner and still feel today.

Hope to see you in class!
